Let’s be honest, tablets are great devices, but they can’t really handle the heavy load that’s often required in a professional environment. Sure you can fling upset fowl toward pigs and crumbling towers, but when you’re not playing games the realities of running a business require desktop or Ultrabook-like power.

Just kidding. That may have been true several years ago, but today tablets are exceptional devices for many tasks from reading e-mail to researching on the web, however business owners already have a lot on their plates and the last thing they want to worry about is managing two new devices. Thanks to Toshiba they no longer have to.

The Toshiba Portégé Detachable Ultrabook delivers two devices for the price of one. Starting inside the Portégé Detachable Ultrabook, the guts are powered by the latest Intel Core i5 or i7 processor with vPro technology, which is an extra layer of security built right into the processor. For improved speed and performance the Ultrabook comes with two solid state drive options—128GB or 256GB.

Stepping outside the device you’ll find a full-size backlit and spill-resistant keyboard—yes, a real full-size keyboard! This also includes both a touchpad and Accupoint—that little eraser-tip-like nub you constantly use to navigate the device.

Of course the newest way to navigate is to swipe, tap or scroll with your fingers on the gorgeous and rugged Corning Concore glass touchscreen. The portable 11.6″ anti-glare and fingerprint-resistant display is responsive to 10-finger, capacitive-touch allowing executives to take full advantage of the new Windows 8 feature-set.

A big key to the versatility of this machine is that unlike a lot of other tablet-devices out there which require a special adapter to play well with others, the Portégé Detachable Ultrabook comes with every port you’ll need, including a full-size SD slot, USB 3.0 and a micro HDMI port—and that’s just for the detachable tablet. When connected to the keyboard you get additional ports for HDMI, RGB, LAN and standard USB.

At just 3.19 lbs. fully assembled (or 1.87 lbs. as a tablet), this uber-slim device is ready to tackle the biggest projects from the office or on the road. In fact, if you leave your desk at lunch, a single battery charge can last up to 5 hours and 10 minutes, taking you all the way to the end of your workday without reaching into your travel bag for a charger.

More entrepreneurs these days are cutting back on travel and using technology in place of face-to-face meetings. This is where the Portégé Detachable Ultrabook really shines. You can jump on a video conference call, using either the front- or rear-facing camera. When your meeting is over and the deal is done, you can use the amazing Digitizer and Pen on the tablet display to sign on the dotted line and capture your signature just as if you were at the conference table with the papers in front of you. The Digitizer feature also provides a great note-taking experience or can be used for sketching or simply doodling. Then again, if you’re doodling you’re probably done for the day and ready to resume your game of tossing screaming birds around your screen.
