A Look Ahead

January 2, 2013: A Look Ahead

It’s New Year’s week–somehow we’ve managed to stretch this celebration–so what better time to look ahead to see what will be hot in 2013.

Content regained its place on the throne (as in “content is king”) so you will need a content plan for 2013. In case you missed Monday’s post on SmallBizDaily, we offered a few ideas to get you started using content to market your small business. If you’re interested in where technology is going (as every small business owner should be), check out what I wrote for ReadWrite.com about the 7 technology trends that will mean the most for entrepreneurs this year. And in addition to the Trendcast and here at SmallBizDaily, I frequently write about trends at the Groupon Merchant blog as well.

Demographics always play a vital role in determining business trends. Several demographic shifts are underway in America right now, and there are plenty of opportunities within each. We all know the baby boomers are aging (the oldest turn 67 this year, the youngest 49) and require all types of products and services savvy entrepreneurs can provide. The leading edge of the echo boomers (born starting in 1990) turn 23, and as they start entering the workforce, they’ll be spending on furniture, décor, work clothes and more. Within a few years, they’ll start settling down, having families of their own creating a renewed need for children’s products and services.

I wrote two 2013 hot trends articles which should be posted soon, one on Business on Main, the other on SmallBizTrends. And be sure to sign up for my FREE “Hottest Trends of 2013” webinar (sponsored by AT&T) on January 17th at 1 p.m. EST. I’ll be doing another Hot Trends for 2013 webinar for Business on Main on January 24th (no link available yet).

2013 should be a good year for small business, and we look forward to sharing the good times with you. Our best wishes for a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year.
