Americans’ deep attachment to and affection for their pets is obvious. According to the American Pet Products Association, we spend nearly $53 billion giving our pets a better life. Now, says this article in Bloomberg Businessweek, we’re dropping big bucks giving them a better “afterlife” as well.

The magazine notes that the International Association of Pet Cemeteries and Crematories says just a few years ago only a few pet aftercare facilities even existed in America: “So few, in fact, that nobody bothered to count them.” However, today there are about 700 such facilities (funeral homes, crematories and cemeteries) nationwide.
