21. Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg, theSkimm
Although Danielle Weisberg and Carly Zakin were both TV news producers, they knew TV wasn’t the best way to deliver the news to busy millennials. In 2012, they used $4,000 to launch The Daily Skimm, an email newsletter delivering a “skimmable” breakdown of the day’s most important news events to young women who want to stay current but don’t have time for traditional news.
TheSkimm now has 7 million subscribers; the company also has a podcast, an app and in-depth Skimm Guides. Zakin and Weisberg remain committed to educating and empowering users: In 2016, theSkimm helped register over 100,000 people to vote.
