holiday

Are you in the beauty business? If you are, you’ll want to know what Larissa Jensen, Executive Director, Industry Analyst, Beauty for NPD Group is predicting for this holiday season.

While holiday sales are already in gear, there are still some things you can do to take advantage of the trends. Jensen expects beauty sales to be strong, continuing the “huge success of the beauty market” during the 2017 holidays and throughout 2018.

Skincare, especially skincare sets, should perform well, Jensen says. In particular, there’s a lot of interest in face masks. Consumers are also likely to scoop up false eyelashes (to wear to holiday parties) and lip gloss.

Mini- or travel-sized skincare and makeup products are expected to be hot sellers, Jensen says, given the double-digit gains they experienced throughout the year. She attributes the popularity of these products to their “low price point and fun packaging.” Mini-sized products make great add-on gifts, so be sure to feature them prominently in your store or salon or on your website.

Fragrances are also big sellers during the holidays—more than one-third of fragrance sales occur in December, according to Jensen. One factor driving fragrance sales is new brand introductions, she says: “Most fragrance manufacturers wait until the second half or last quarter of the year to introduce a new scent.”

Even home décor retailers will be able to cash in on the fragrance boom, says Jensen, who expects home scents to have a strong holiday season. Over 80% of consumers use home scents, she says, so consumers will likely be scooping them up both as gifts and for their own homes.
